The PD4 substation monitor was developed in conjunction with a UK Regional Electricity Company (REC) to detect and report the operation of LV fuses and other equipment in a distribution substation. Both ground-mounted and pole-top substations were monitored as part of the initial trial and offered the following features

• Real time monitoring of HV/LV distribution substations
• Improves network response times
• Detects and reports LV Fuse Operations
• Detects and reports EFI operations
• Monitors and reports HV interruptions to supply
• Self contained rechargeable battery and charger

The PD4 substation monitor was developed in conjunction with a UK Regional Electricity Company (REC) to detect and report the operation of LV fuses and other equipment in a distribution substation. Both ground-mounted and pole-top substations were monitored as part of the initial trial.

The equipment was installed and commissioned live, the LV fuse sensors (specifically developed for this project) are strapped to the LV cable cores insulation below the LV distribution board.

In ground mounted substations FIND Earth Fault Indicators were installed, and their telecontrol contacts monitored by the PD4.

All Alarms are date and time stamped and report back to a Central Host PC in the REC Operations Centre. The communications network selected for the trial was PAKNET (operated by Vodafone).

The MMI in the REC Operations Centre was designed with the help of REC Operations Room Managers to ensure that correct and useful information is provided to staff when answering customer calls.

The Central Host PC provides displays and alerts for incoming alarms, searches for archive events, allows reprogramming of
remote PD4 sites and manages the communications over the PAKNET network.
